Chimney Fires on the Rise
12.10.2009

St. Helens, Oregon - - With recent cold temperatures, Columbia River Fire and Rescue has been responded to an increasing number of chimney fires.  Since December 1, 2009, CRF&R has responded to six chimney or wood stove related fires.  Firefighters encourage homeowners to take precautions before, and while using, a wood burning stove.  A chimney fire can not only cause damage to the chimney but can also spread to the surround structure of the home.  Please follow these guidelines for safe fires this winter:

• Season firewood outdoors during the summer, stacked off the ground.
• Burn only well seasoned firewood that has been split properly.
• Start fires with clean newspaper and dry kindling.
• Do not use wet, damp or unseasoned firewood, which can cause creosote buildup.
• Keep combustible materials clear of wood stoves, including drapes, furniture and paper products.
• Clean your chimney at least once a year and have it regularly inspected by a professional.
• Test your smoke alarms regularly and change batteries as needed.
• If you do have a chimney fire, evacuate the structure and call 9-1-1.
